Associate Professor Patrick Weinrauch is an Orthopaedic Surgeon who exclusively manages hip joint disorders in adults. His practice provides a comprehensive range of treatment options, including hip arthroscopy, hip preservation surgery, hip resurfacing, and both primary and revision hip replacement procedures. A significant part of his private practice is dedicated to helping active people maintain high levels of function so they can continue enjoying sport and recreational activities.
He graduated from the University of Queensland with a medical degree in 1997 before completing specialist training in Orthopaedic Surgery in Queensland. In 2006, he was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and then undertook advanced post-graduate fellowship training in the surgical management of hip disorders. In 2007, he was appointed Clinical Fellow in Hip Surgery at University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire in England, where he specialised in hip arthroscopy, hip resurfacing, hip replacement and revision hip replacement. During this time, he also trained at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham, developing expertise in hip resurfacing and open joint preservation surgery, including pelvic and femoral osteotomy. On returning to Australia in 2008, he established the Brisbane Hip Clinic at St Andrew's War Memorial Hospital.
In addition to being a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, he is a Fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association and the Academy of Wilderness Medicine. He is also a member of the Australian Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a foundation member of the Australian Hip Arthroscopy Society.
From 2020 to 2024, he served as Director of Orthopaedic Surgery at St Andrew's War Memorial Hospital and was the Orthopaedic representative on the hospital's Medical Advisory Committee. Earlier leadership roles have included Deputy Editor of the International Journal of Advanced Joint Reconstruction, Scientific Secretary of the Queensland Branch of the Australian Orthopaedic Association, and President of the Queensland Orthopaedic Registrar's Association. In 2010, he was selected as the Australian Orthopaedic Association's representative for the prestigious ABC Traveling Fellowship in the United States.
Teaching and mentoring form an important part of his professional life. He regularly demonstrates advanced surgical techniques and presents lectures to both Australian and international surgeons on the management of hip joint disorders. As an industry reference centre surgeon, he develops and delivers education programs covering anterior approach total hip replacement, hip resurfacing, revision hip replacement and hip arthroscopy. He also contributes to the education of physiotherapists, nursing staff and other allied health professionals.
Alongside his clinical work, Associate Professor Weinrauch has a strong interest in research and orthopaedic engineering. He has authored multiple publications and completed a Master of Engineering thesis focused on revision hip replacement surgery. His academic appointments include Associate Professor at the Griffith University School of Medicine, and he has been awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) for research into the surgical management of adult hip disorders. He also works as a consultant to the medical device industry, contributing to the design and development of innovative surgical techniques, instrumentation and prosthetic implants used in hip replacement and arthroscopy. In addition, he holds the position of Adjunct Associate Professor in Counter Terrorism and Operational Medicine at Central Queensland University.
Associate Professor Weinrauch consults from the Brisbane Hip Clinic and performs surgery at St Andrew's War Memorial Hospital in Brisbane. Telemedicine consultations are also available for patients living in regional Australia, interstate and overseas, making specialist hip care more accessible wherever they are located.
